Dilemma of Choice: Clerical or MNC

Considering this situation we have few scenarios:

What you will achieve as a clerk:

In Public Sector Bank, even in a clerical cadre, you will command a lot of respect in the society. Within about two years of joining as a clerk, you can become eligible for promotion as an Officer in the Bank (Varies from bank to bank). You will have job security here and there are no layoffs. You can go home with a relax mind at the end of day. You will be seen as a responsible person. You can expect to get posting in your home district, down the career as a clerk, in the bank. But this doesn't apply to officers. As an officer, you may be transferred anywherein India anytime.

What you will lose as a clerk:

You will lose your current fat pay check which you are getting now. You will be burdened with the responsibilities of the government bank job like cross selling, targets, implementation of government schemes as and when required etc. You will be responsible for your actions in the bank(but that applies to any job). You will be losing your peace of mind. You will miss the excitement of MNC. The job will be monotonousin the bank. The growth rate in pay check is very less as compared to the ones given in MNCs. Your posting may be rural areas, which may not have proper schools according to your choice or big hospitals etc but you can definitely enjoy cleanliness and freshness of environment, which you will miss in metro. With frequent transfers be ready to be relocated according to bank’s transfer policy and establishing the whole house setup again.

What you will achieve in MNC:

You will achieve tremendous growth in pay checkdepending upon your performance there. You should not expect the same growth rate in public sector bank. You will be posted in major metro cities in India where the MNC has its offices. You can enjoy your week ends in the MNCs and can have night lifethere. You can jump from one MNC to another MNC as this is the trend being followed there. But as clerk in PSBs, stigmaof government job will be attached to it which will be very difficult to change and this will make it difficult for you to leave the job in future.

What you will lose in MNC:

You will have no job security there. You will always have to do job hunting and keep reinventing yourself to suit the industry. You will miss the chance to work closely in the public sector. You will miss the chance to be directly a part of government’s initiatives for brining change in the society. You may not command that much importance as compared to a bank employee. You may not be in authority. You may not have so many contacts as compared to an employee in bank.

What is your personality:

Finally, it all depends on what personalityyou have. If you are a kind of risk averse, then go for clerical job which will offer you a monotonous life with secured job with lot of learning opportunities. If you like seeing different places and meeting new people, you can surely enjoy that with bank as there will be regular transfers.
If you want a particular city for your life time then go for MNC and keep working there as long as you wish (till there is layoff, of course). You can also remain in that particular city by keeping the job preference same while still changing the company. If you like excitement and nightlife, I would suggest go MNC surely as you will have weekends for you.

So, at the end it all comes down to you, what you want in your life, what you prefer, what choices you make, what options you have and what you can achieve. At last, you are the better judge of your own life.

Good Luck!!!
